Big visions need a reality check, and that's part of our job. The founder's original plan centered on a large community center with a lease of more than $300,000 a year. We helped him reshape it into a phased approach: start with a smaller hub, build credibility, and scale up as funding grows.

Same mission. A plan the organization can actually pull off.

Keeping It Real

Results

  • A complete nonprofit foundation built from zero in about six weeks

  • More than 20 core documents and tools covering governance, strategy, finance, brand, and outreach

  • 4 of 5 founding board seats filled

  • A $50,000 fundraising roadmap with clear goals and asks

  • A website, brand, and outreach plan ready to launch

Everything is documented, organized, and ready to use. Whenever the organization is ready to move, it can hit the ground running instead of starting from scratch.

"Commvey has been instrumental in our non-profit journey. Not only did they provide us with strategy and execution plans, they have guided us on each step of the entire process. We wouldn't be where we're at without their help."

From Big Idea to Launch-Ready Nonprofit in 6 Weeks: How to Start a Nonprofit

Client: First-time founder launching a community care nonprofit in Wisconsin

Services: Strategic planning, organizational setup, governance and policy, branding, marketing, fundraising, and website planning

Timeline: 6-week build, followed by implementation support

Starting point: A founder, a vision, and nothing on paper

The Challenge

The founder came to us with a big, heartfelt idea: a community organization that would help people facing houselessness, addiction, and gaps in mental health care get back on their feet. He had the passion and the network. What he didn't have was an organization.

No mission statement. No bylaws. No board, budget, brand, or plan. Just a vision and a lot of energy, and he wanted to move fast.

Where We Came In

We built the whole thing with him, from the ground up, in about six weeks. Weekly working sessions kept the founder in every decision while our team did the heavy lifting between calls: research, drafting, design, and revisions.

We started with research. We looked at the existing nonprofits in the region, mapped who was already doing what, and identified where this organization could fill a real gap instead of duplicating someone else's work.

What We Built

Foundation

  • Mission, vision, core values, and guiding principles

  • Stakeholder map covering clients, volunteers, funders, partners, and the wider community

  • Capacity and asset map of the founder's networks, skills, and resources

Governance and operations

  • Bylaws

  • Conflict of interest policy

  • Financial policies, including spending limits and approval rules

  • A decision-making structure that spells out who decides what

  • An org chart

  • A board recruitment tracker and outreach plan

Strategy and money

  • A first-year strategic plan with four priorities, SMART goals, and KPIs

  • A program master plan with a phased rollout

  • An operating budget and multi-year projections

  • A fundraising plan with a $50,000 first-year goal, broken down by quarter and use of funds

Brand and visibility

  • Logo and brand identity

  • Marketing plan with a SWOT analysis

  • Community outreach strategy grounded in the organization's values

  • Content calendar

  • Website mockup, full page content, and a step-by-step launch checklist

Starting a nonprofit is a lot. Legal setup, policies, a board, a budget, a brand, a plan, a website, and somehow you're still supposed to do the actual mission work.

We build the foundation with you so you're not guessing at any of it. You make the decisions. We do the research, drafting, design, and organizing, and we tell you the truth when a plan needs adjusting.
